Woman admits role in hotel slaying

A Bronx woman admitted Tuesday that she took part in a deadly robbery at a Fort Lee hotel more than two years ago.

Gina Conway and two others were charged with murder after a botched robbery at the Holiday Inn on Route 4 ended in the shooting death of one of the victims in September 2006.

Authorities said Conway, 31, met David Taylor and Allan "Jay" Plowden and told her boyfriend that the two men drove flashy cars and carried a lot of cash.

The boyfriend, Charly Wingate, a hip-hop artist from Harlem known as "Max B," then recruited an associate to rob Taylor and Plowden, prosecutors said.

Conway, whose trial was scheduled to start this week in Superior Court in Hackensack, decided to take a plea offer, telling a judge Tuesday that she was at the hotel with the associate, Kelvin Leerdam.

Leerdam had a gun, she said, and she assisted in the robbery that led to Taylor's shooting death.

Conway, who faced life in prison if she were convicted of murder, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and armed robbery. She could receive up to 18 years in prison when she is sentenced March 21.

Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Martin Delaney declined to comment. Defense attorney Robert Kalisch also declined to comment.

Prosecutors had said at the time of the trio's arrest that Taylor and Plowden had taken Conway to their hotel room the night before the robbery.

The two men brought two other women to their hotel the following night, prosecutors said. Conway and Leerdam, who had hatched a plan to rob them, confronted and duct-taped Plowden in his room, they said.

Although Plowden had $30,000 cash in his room, he told Conway and Leerdam that Taylor had the money, prosecutors said.

Conway and Leerdam then forced Plowden to call Taylor and have him come to the room, prosecutors said. Taylor was shot in the head when he arrived, they said.

Leerdam and Wingate are both charged with murder. Their cases are pending in Superior Court in Hackensack.
